Financial Aid Options for Civil Engineering Students
A career in civil engineering requires at least a bachelor’s degree, and many positions are only open for those with a master’s degree in the field. All of that schooling can be expensive, though. Let’s take a look at your financial aid options if you want a degree in civil engineering.
Civil Engineering Scholarships
Scholarships (sometimes called fellowships at the master’s degree level) are a great financial aid option for students because they don’t have to be repaid after you graduate. Scholarships are given to students who show merit in some way, and are often given to students who write a winning essay around a specific topic. Some of the many scholarships and fellowships that are open specifically for engineering students are offered:
- American Society of Civil Engineering
- Association for Iron and Steel Technology Foundation
- Association of State Dam Safety Officials
- Department of Defense
- National Society of Professional Engineers
- Society of Women Engineers
- Power Engineering Magazine
- Wire Reinforcement Institute
In addition, most engineering programs offer scholarships directly to their students, and you can also apply to general scholarships from your school and community organizations.
Civil Engineering Grants
Engineering students can also apply to grants if they need money for school. Grants are like scholarships in some ways – they don’t have to be repaid after college and are available to engineering students at all levels. However, in order to apply for a grant, you must meet financial qualifications. These funds are meant to help students who would otherwise have a hard time paying for school. Grants are available from lots of organizations and companies, and you can start your search with the following:
- American Society for Engineering Education
- National Physical Science Consortium
- National Science Foundation
- National SMART Grant
Like with scholarships, grants can also come directly from your school engineering department or community organizations and other general sources. Some grants are meant to be used for tuition and other related expenses, while other grants can be applied directly to specific research projects you want to complete.
Other Forms of Financial Aid
While scholarships and grants are the most popular forms of financial aid for students, you can also get student loans. These loans do have to be repaid, but are typically available at a lower interest rate. Employer tuition assistance programs might also be available for you if you’re already working in the engineering field.
